Isilon is a “scale-out” Network-Attached storage solution that provides massive scalability to over 20 Petabytes in a single file system, without compromising performance as total data volume scales up, and stays simple regardless of how much capacity is added or performance required.
Isilon is also the world’s fastest performing NAS available, providing record-breaking performance of over 1.6 million SPECsfs2008 CIFS file operations per second, with “single stream” performance of over 700MB/s, and over 100GB/s of aggregate throughput from a single file system.
Isilon Hardware Architecture
Isilon scale-out storage systems are comprised of a series of high-performance servers (nodes) that provide storage capacity, RAM, and CPU resources throughout an entire Isilon cluster, and are installable in less than 10 minutes without the help of EMC Professional Services.
There are four types of Isilon storage nodes available (S-200, X-200, X-400, and NL-400), each being purpose-built for performance, capacity, or a balance of both, through the use of High-speed SAS Drives, High-capacity SATA Drives, and SSD Drives for high-performance caching.
In addition to storage nodes, A-100 Performance Accelerator Nodes provide additional RAM and CPU resources that are spread across the entire Isilon cluster.
Isilon OneFS Operating System
The OneFS Operating System provides the intelligence behind Isilon, combining volume management, file system management, and data protection into one unified software layer, thereby creating a single intelligent file system that spans across every node in an Isilon cluster.
As nodes are added to an Isilon cluster, OneFS AutoBalance automatically and transparently reallocates and rebalances existing data, making disk space more usable and efficient across ALL nodes in the cluster, without downtime or performing manual data migrations.
To keep deployment simple, Isilon does not require the use of a proprietary API or gateway to communicate with the cluster, and easily integrates with applications that write data to a standard network share or mapped drive letter.
Isilon and Regulatory Compliance
For data that needs to be stored on a WORM Volume (Write-Once-Read-Many) and retained for compliance regulations such as SEC 17a-4, Sarbanes-Oxley, or HIPAA, optional SmartLock software can be configured into any Isilon system.
SmartLock can establish default retention periods at the directory level, or customized retention periods down to the file level, including litigation holds, thereby providing secure, flexible data protection and retention rules for anything from a small subset of data to an entire Isilon cluster.
