NetApp Filer Migration Basics
NetApp Filers are network-attach storage solutions (NAS) built with a large number of high-capacity disk drives and high-redundancy server components, and provide large, scalable file systems to applications that require high-performance and massive scalability.
ONTAP, the operating system that powers all NetApp Filers, was designed specifically to address the increased performance and capacity requirements that traditional server-attached storage arrays were unable to meet.
As data retention laws and regulations were introduced or tightened across many industries, NetApp introduced SnapLock, a method for implementing Write Once Read Many (WORM) properties on a disk array, to prevent accidental or intentional modifications and deletions of files until a predefined retention period is met.
Although NetApp is still an industry leader in the NAS storage market, organizations that require even greater performance and scalability are replacing their NetApp Filers with EMC Isilon, and face a unique set of data migration challenges when moving SnapLock-enabled file systems.
To reduce the time and effort required to migrate file systems from a NetApp Filer onto an EMC Isilon platform, our purpose-built NAS migration eliminates certain risks commonly associated with moving large production file systems from one storage platform to another.
If your organization implemented data retention policies using SnapLock, then we can replicate those policies onto the Isilon or other target device, including the original file creation date and other associated metadata, thereby maintaining regulatory compliance for laws such as SEC 17a-4 and Sarbanes-Oxley.
At Data Archive we understand the value of your data and how important continued access to this information is to the success of your organization, so our NAS-to-NAS migration utility allows continuous access to data throughout a migration effort.
Our goal is to not only ensure that your information is accurately migrated, but also that your access requirements are continuously met for the duration of the project.
